“Smart vending machine” is a seller’s term for four kinds of equipment. The cheapest is a card reader added to a snack machine you already own: $329 for Cantaloupe’s Engage2 plus $9.95 a month. The most expensive camera cooler with a published price is 365’s PicoCooler Vision Max at $10,225 (365 webstore7).
| Kind | How a sale works | Published price range |
|---|---|---|
| Spiral machine with card reader and telemetry | Shopper picks a selection and pays; one item drops | New snack machine from $3,7285, plus a $329–$399 reader |
| Smart cooler | Shopper taps a card, opens the door, takes items; the cooler works out the charge | $2,950–$10,225 from US sellers; from $2,179 on a factory listing |

| Micro market | Open shelves; shopper scans items at a self-checkout kiosk | Not published |
A spiral machine with a card reader
A standard snack or drink machine becomes “smart” when a card reader and telemetry are added. The reader takes cards and phone wallets; the telemetry reports sales remotely. A San Diego route listed on BizBuySell describes its Cantaloupe setup as “sales and reporting, remote monitoring”25.
| Reader | Hardware | Monthly | Processing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cantaloupe Engage2 | $329 | $9.95 | 5.95% |
| Cantaloupe ePort G113 (telemeter only; card reader sold separately) | $189 | $9.95; $12.95 “Cashless Plus” | 5.95% |
| Nayax VPOS Touch1 | $399 for 1–4 units | $9.99 | Calculated from your price range; not shown as a percentage |
| PayRange4 | Not published | $0.99–$1.50 per machine per week; $35 activation | 3.95% + $0.02 |
Cantaloupe’s G11 comes with a 12-month commitment, and early termination costs the remaining months’ fees. PayRange requires at least 10 machines. Card readers compared covers the readers in detail.
A smart cooler
A smart cooler is a glass-door fridge with a lock, a card reader, and a way to tell what was taken: cameras, weight trays, or RFID tags. Smart coolers made up 33.5% of the equipment deployed by operators in Automatic Merchandiser’s 2026 State of the Industry20 survey, and more than half of respondents run at least one.
| Detection | Example | Price | Monthly fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cameras | VMFS AI Grab & Go Cooler6 to 365 PicoCooler Vision Max | $2,950–$10,225 | At VMFS, $39.99 and $0.07 per sale, plus about $10 to a third-party card reader provider and about $15 for a SIM if there’s no Wi-Fi; not published by 365 |
| Weight trays plus cameras (Cantaloupe10) | Cantaloupe Smart Store 600 / 7009 | $7,4958 / $9,495 | Not published by Cantaloupe |
| Weight only | Weimi smart fridge13, factory order | $2,179–$2,647; freight terms not published | Not published |
| RFID tags | Byte Smart Fridge11 | $5,500; XL $7,000 | $125, plus $0.15 per tag12 |
Smart coolers compared lists 26 models, including the Stockwell 2.0, with fees and warranties. AI vending machines covers the camera models and the per-sale recognition fees some of them charge.
A walk-up store
365’s Stockwell 2.0 is a larger unattended cabinet: 57 inches high, 60 wide, and 24 deep15, weighing 400 lb. It uses nine cameras14, with the right side refrigerated and the left at room temperature. It lists at $8,259 on 365’s webstore; the monthly fee is not published.
A micro market
A micro market is open shelving and coolers with a self-checkout kiosk. Nothing is locked. In the 2026 State of the Industry20 survey, in a passage on micro market theft, nearly two-thirds of respondents reported shrink below 5%, and 12.5% reported more than 10%.
Avanti’s Smart N Go is a modular market behind locked glass doors, with infrared sensor trays and a payment kiosk. Its FAQ recommends sites with 200 or more people a day16 and gives a six-week lead time. Each refrigerated module draws 9 amps, and two modules need a dedicated 20-amp circuit17. Price is not published, and its documentation was last updated in 2023.
365 accepts SNAP/EBT only on its MM6 and MM6 Mini micro market kiosks, not on its coolers18.
Site size
Two vendors publish a minimum. Micromart’s lease program recommends 150 or more people a day19 and a one-year location contract. Avanti recommends 200 or more for Smart N Go. We found no published minimum for spiral machines or other smart coolers.
Rules for machines and coolers
Micro markets fall under ordinary retail food rules instead.
- Refrigerated food. The FDA’s model Food Code21, §4-204.111, requires a machine selling food that needs refrigeration to have an automatic shutoff that stops sales whenever it can’t keep food cold. After it is filled or serviced, the air inside may not stay above 41°F for more than 30 minutes. It applies where a state or county has adopted it. California’s Retail Food Code sets 45°F for vending machines; see vending machine permits in California.
- Accessibility. Under the 2010 ADA Standards22, §228.1, at least one of each type of vending machine provided must comply with §309: a clear floor space at least 30 by 48 inches, controls within the §308 reach ranges (15 to 48 inches above the floor for an unobstructed reach), and controls operable with one hand, without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist, and with no more than 5 pounds of force.
- Calorie labels. Operators with 20 or more machines must post calories for any item whose label calories the buyer cannot see before buying (21 CFR 101.823). Operators with fewer machines can register voluntarily with the FDA24.
- Sales tax. In California, a cooler that unlocks first and charges afterwards may not fit the vending machine sales tax rules. California sales tax on vending machines explains why and what to ask the CDTFA.
